Exciting New Interviews From 2007 IAJGS Conference

Og wants everyone to know that it’s been a very busy week in Salt Lake City, with the meeting of the 27th IAJGS Conference on Jewish Genealogy. We’ve added new interviews covering topics ranging from DNA to the Hall of Names at Yad Vashem, to a free new website aimed at reuniting family members separated by the Holocaust. Og normally urges you to take a few minutes to watch our new content, but today I’m urging you to take your time and browse our New & Feautred channel. There’s just too much “good stuff” there for you to miss ANY of it!

Og's Feeling Frisky!

Og’s in the mood for love…and you will be, too, after you’ve viewed “The Kiss” as our new programming for the day. See how far things have progressed (whether for better or worse) from the day in 1896 when this first movie kiss – between May Irwin and John Rice -- was filmed in the comedy “The Widow Jones”.

Since the first kiss is so short, you might also want to wander around Roots Television's other channels. In Preserving the Past, you’ll find a new short film about Pioneering Histories -- The Vaughan Homestead. Built in 1865 in Auckland, New Zealand, and comprising of 1200 acres, the family farmed the land for over 100 years. Learn how all this could be lost to the development of 1700 homes, and what is being done to attempt to preserve the past.

Boy Scouts Become Genealogists

“On my honor I will do my best…” everyone probably knows this as the beginning of the oath of the Boy Scouts of America. But Boy Scouting has never been as much fun as it is now that you can earn a Genealogy Merit Badge to go along with the more traditional ones. In a featured short show, BSA Genealogy Merit Badge: An Introduction, Starr Hailey Campbell tells us some of the steps our Boy Scouts will take to earn this exciting badge – interviewing a relative, obtaining an original record, learning about family, etc. Sounds like we’re going to have another whole generation of considerate, respectful genealogists!

Calling All Civil War Buffs -- An Alternate View of War

Today, Og's suggesting that you enjoy a lecture from Roots Television's New and Featured channel, titled In the Presence of Mine Enemies: War in the Heart of America, 1859 - 1863, from the UVA NewsMakers, that takes a new look at the reasons behind the Civil War. History Professor and Dean of the College and Graduate School of Arts and Sciences, Edward L. Ayers, Ph.D., decided to re-examine the real reasons behind the Civil War after determining that commonly held beliefs regarding the conflict between the northern industrial society and southern agrarian society just weren’t as valid as originally thought. So whether you’re a history buff, a war buff, or are just interested in looking at this war in a different light, you’re sure to enjoy this new programming.
